A one-hour presentation by Richard Hammar for the Springfield (Missouri) Astronomy Club. Beginning with a review of the titanic conflict between the geocentric and heliocentric models, the presentation continues with a review of Galileo’s adoption of the heliocentric model, and the “proofs” he compiled with his telescope. He eventually would publish his seminal Dialog Concerning the Two World Systems, in which he endorses and advocates heliocentricism.
This work, which was highly critical of Pope Urban VIII and the Church’s defense of geocentricism, led to Galileo’s trial and ultimate conviction on the charge of heresy.
You will have a front row seat to the proceedings in this presentation by astronomer-attorney Richard Hammar.
